Their nearest neighbor was Halvor Nustad who lived about 40 rods away. In 1871 the Brendes moved into their own dugout that fall their log cabin was completed with the aid of good friends and the family was finally living in their own home.
Eric was a member of the Nidaros Congregation being confirmed by Rev. Sando. He farmed for many years near Midway.
His parents, three sisters, Gunhild, Gerda and Eda and one brother Gustav preceded him in death. Eric was ever ready to help any one in need.
